Virtual Box to VMware ESXI

On the weekend of May 5th we started converting our Ubuntu / virtualbox servers to run ESXI 5.0 from VMware. Not all things go as planned and of course with my luck some of our services experienced an outage that was not planned for. We were already using a virtualization technology and decided to move from Virtual Box to VMware to offer more to our clients. 

Here are the steps that we used for the migration.

  • Backup all Data and do a Export of the virtual machine at midnight when demand was low. Operation was expected to be up to an hour for some servers. Bring them back online for the next event
  • Configure the new VM's on our test rack in staging for deployment. We decided that for the move we would consolidate our services from multiple VM's down to 3 for the move and then expand them once finished. 
  • The use of Rsync allowed us to mirror the old setup and data to the new VM's and it worked perfectly. Once the data copy was done we had to change some kernel modules for the new NIC's.
